What is Nassau?

Nassau is the most popular golf betting format in the world. It's actually three separate bets in one: Front 9, Back 9, and Total 18. Each bet is independent, so you can win or lose each side individually. This makes Nassau exciting because even if you're losing the front nine, you can still win the back nine and total bet.

The beauty of Nassau is its simplicity: whoever shoots the lowest score wins that bet. If you're playing a $10 Nassau with 3 friends, that's $10 per side, per player. You could win all three bets ($30), lose all three ($30), or split them - it all depends on your performance.

How Scoring Works

  • Front 9: Add up your scores for holes 1-9. Lowest score wins this bet.
  • Back 9: Add up your scores for holes 10-18. Lowest score wins this bet.
  • Total 18: Add up all 18 holes. Lowest overall score wins this bet.
  • Payouts: If you win a bet, each of the other players pays you the bet amount. If 4 players are in a $10 Nassau, the winner of each side collects $30 (3 losers × $10 each).

Example Calculation

Setup: 4 players, $10 per side

Results:

  • • Player A: Front 9 = 42, Back 9 = 40, Total = 82 (wins all 3 bets)
  • • Player B: Front 9 = 44, Back 9 = 43, Total = 87
  • • Player C: Front 9 = 45, Back 9 = 44, Total = 89
  • • Player D: Front 9 = 43, Back 9 = 42, Total = 85

Payouts:

  • • Player A: +$90 (won all three sides, collected $30 each)
  • • Player B: -$30 (lost all three sides)
  • • Player C: -$30 (lost all three sides)
  • • Player D: -$30 (lost all three sides)

Nassau Strategy Tips

  • Play your game: Nassau rewards consistency. Don't take unnecessary risks trying to win one side if you're already winning another.
  • Know when to press: If you're down early, consider accepting or initiating a press to increase your potential winnings on the remaining holes.
  • Handicaps matter: Playing net (with handicaps) levels the playing field. A 15-handicapper can compete with a scratch golfer when strokes are applied.
  • Mind games: Nassau is as much mental as physical. Knowing you can still win the back 9 or total even if you lose the front keeps you engaged.
