What's Included in the Golf Pool Spreadsheet Template
Our free golf pool spreadsheet template handles everything you need to run a professional tournament pool:
- Automatic scoring: Enter golfer scores once, and the spreadsheet calculates everyone's total automatically
- Multiple format support: Pre-built tabs for tiered format (6-8 tiers) and salary cap format ($50K budget)
- Payment tracking: Track who paid entry fees, who owes money, and total prize pool
- Live leaderboard: Automatically ranks participants by score with color-coded standings
- Missed cut handling: Configurable penalty for golfers who miss the cut
- Payout calculator: Automatically splits prize pool by your chosen percentages (70/20/10, 60/30/10, etc.)
- Participant roster: Track names, emails, picks, and contact info
- Instructions tab: Step-by-step setup guide built into the spreadsheet
How to Use the Tiered Format Template
The tiered format is perfect for office pools with 10-50 participants. Here's how to set it up:
Step 1: Create Your Tier List
Navigate to the "Tier Setup" tab. You'll see columns for Tier 1 through Tier 8. Populate each tier with 15-20 golfer names based on world rankings or Vegas odds.
Example Masters Tier Setup:
- Tier 1 (15 players): Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Xander Schauffele...
- Tier 2 (15 players): Collin Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay, Max Homa, Ludvig Åberg...
- Tier 3-6: Continue with progressively lower-ranked players
Pro tip: Use our pre-built tier rankings for major championships to save time.
Step 2: Add Participants and Their Picks
Go to the "Participant Picks" tab. Add each participant's name in Column A. Then enter their golfer picks in the corresponding tier columns (one pick per tier).
Example Participant Entry:
- • Name: John Smith
- • Tier 1 Pick: Scottie Scheffler
- • Tier 2 Pick: Max Homa
- • Tier 3 Pick: Cameron Young
- • Tiers 4-6: Continue selecting one golfer per tier
The spreadsheet will validate that participants don't pick the same golfer twice or pick golfers outside their tier.
Step 3: Enter Tournament Scores
During the tournament, navigate to the "Golfer Scores" tab. Enter each golfer's 4-round total to par (e.g., -12, -8, +2).
You can pull scores from PGA.com official leaderboards, ESPN Golf, or Masters.com (for the Masters).
Missed cuts: For golfers who miss the cut, the spreadsheet automatically applies the penalty you configure (default: last place score + 10 strokes).
Step 4: View Live Leaderboard
Go to the "Leaderboard" tab to see real-time standings. The spreadsheet automatically sums each participant's golfer scores and ranks everyone from 1st to last. Color-coded cells highlight leaders (green), middle pack (white), and bottom performers (red).
How to Use the Salary Cap Format Template
The salary cap format offers more strategic depth. Perfect for dedicated golf fans who want roster-building complexity.
Step 1: Assign Golfer Salaries
Navigate to the "Salary Setup" tab. Assign dollar values to 100-150 golfers based on world rankings, Vegas odds, or recent form. Total budget defaults to $50,000, but you can customize it.
Example Salary Pricing:
- • $10,000: Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy (elite favorites)
- • $8,000: Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland (top tier contenders)
- • $6,000: Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele (strong picks)
- • $4,000: Max Homa, Patrick Cantlay (mid-tier value)
- • $2,000: Cameron Young, Sahith Theegala (high upside)
- • $1,000: Long shots and past champions
Step 2: Participants Build Rosters
Go to the "Salary Cap Rosters" tab. Each participant selects 4-6 golfers whose combined salaries don't exceed the $50K budget. The spreadsheet validates roster legality in real-time.
Example roster: Scottie Scheffler ($10K) + Max Homa ($4K) + Cameron Young ($2K) + 3 golfers at $1K each = $19K total. This leaves $31K for remaining picks.
Step 3: Scoring and Leaderboard
Scoring works identically to tiered format. Enter golfer scores in the "Golfer Scores" tab, and the "Salary Cap Leaderboard" auto-updates with rankings.
Payment Tracking Features
The "Payment Tracker" tab helps you manage entry fees and payouts:
- Entry fee tracking: Mark participants as paid/unpaid with checkboxes
- Payment method notes: Track Venmo, Zelle, cash, or check payments
- Total prize pool calculator: Automatically sums all entry fees
- Payout distribution: Splits prize pool by your percentages (default: 70% / 20% / 10% for 1st/2nd/3rd)
- Outstanding payments report: Shows who still owes money with one-click filtering
Pro tip: Set a payment deadline (e.g., Wednesday before Round 1) and lock the spreadsheet to prevent late changes. You can protect cells in Excel/Google Sheets to enforce this.
Customization Options
Our template is fully customizable. Here are common modifications:
Change Number of Tiers
Default is 6 tiers, but you can add or remove columns to create 4-tier, 8-tier, or 10-tier formats. Simply insert/delete columns in the "Tier Setup" tab, and all formulas auto-adjust.
Adjust Missed Cut Penalty
Go to the "Settings" tab and change the missed cut penalty formula. Options include:
- Last place score + 10 strokes (default)
- Last place score + 5 strokes (lenient)
- Fixed penalty like +15 over par
- No penalty (not recommended—creates unfair advantage)
Modify Payout Structure
In the "Payment Tracker" tab, adjust payout percentages. Common splits:
- • 70% / 20% / 10%: Standard for 15-30 participants
- • 60% / 30% / 10%: Rewards runner-up more
- • 50% / 30% / 15% / 5%: Four-place payout for large pools (40+ people)
- • Winner-take-all: 100% to 1st place (high-stakes groups only)
Add Custom Scoring Rules
Want bonus points for eagles, hole-in-ones, or lowest single-round score? The "Custom Rules" tab includes formula examples for:
- +5 bonus points per eagle
- -10 stroke bonus for a 59, 60, or 61
- Penalty for withdrawals or disqualifications
Excel vs Google Sheets: Which Should You Use?
Excel Advantages
- Faster calculations: Excel processes large datasets (100+ participants) faster than Google Sheets
- Offline access: No internet required. Great for golf outings without WiFi.
- Advanced formatting: More color options, conditional formatting rules, and charting tools
- Better mobile app: Excel mobile app is superior to Google Sheets mobile
Google Sheets Advantages
- Real-time collaboration: Multiple people can view/edit simultaneously. Perfect for co-commissioners.
- Auto-save: Never lose your work. Google Sheets saves every change instantly.
- Easy sharing: Share via link. Participants can view leaderboard in real-time without downloading.
- Free: No software purchase required. Works on any device with a browser.
- Version history: Restore previous versions if someone accidentally deletes data
Our recommendation: Use Google Sheets for pools with 10-30 participants. Use Excel for pools with 40+ participants or if you need offline access.

Common Spreadsheet Mistakes to Avoid
1. Not Locking Cells After Picks Deadline
Once the tournament starts, protect your spreadsheet to prevent participants from changing their picks. In Excel: Review → Protect Sheet. In Google Sheets: Data → Protect sheets and ranges. Allow only yourself (the commissioner) to edit.
2. Forgetting to Save Backup Copies
Always save a backup copy before the tournament starts. Google Sheets does this automatically. Excel users should save to OneDrive or email yourself a copy.
3. Not Clarifying Tie-Breaker Rules
Document your tie-breaker rules in the "Instructions" tab before the tournament. Recommended order:
- Lowest single golfer score
- Second-lowest golfer score
- Lowest Tier 1 pick
- Coin flip (if still tied)
4. Entering Scores Wrong
Double-check scores before finalizing. Common errors:
- Entering cumulative scores (268) instead of to-par scores (-16)
- Confusing golfer names (e.g., Cameron Smith vs Cameron Young)
- Not updating after weather delays or Monday finishes
5. Ignoring Missed Cut Players
Don't forget to apply missed cut penalties. The spreadsheet has built-in logic, but you must mark golfers as "MC" (missed cut) in the status column.
Why Spreadsheets Are Painful for Golf Pools
While our free spreadsheet template works for small pools, it has major limitations for 20+ participants:
1. Manual Score Updates (2-4 Hours Per Tournament)
You'll manually enter 50-150 golfer scores four times per tournament (Thursday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday). That's 8-12 hours total for major championships. One typo can invalidate the entire leaderboard.
2. Payment Collection Nightmare
Chasing 25 people for Venmo payments is brutal. You'll send reminders, track who paid via which app, and deal with "I forgot my wallet" excuses. Payment collection alone takes 3-5 hours per tournament.
3. No Live Updates for Participants
Participants constantly text you asking "What's my rank?" or "How's my guy doing?" You'll re-share the spreadsheet link 20+ times per day. Google Sheets helps, but participants still need to refresh manually.
4. Payout Delays
After the tournament, you manually Venmo winners. This takes 1-2 days because you're busy or forget. Winners get annoyed. Some commissioners hold prize money for weeks.
The Better Alternative: Automated Golf Pool Software
Modern golf pool platforms like RunPools eliminate all spreadsheet pain:
- Automatic scoring: Live scores sync every 10 minutes from official PGA data. No manual entry.
- Instant payments: Participants pay entry fees when they join (held in escrow). Winners receive automated payouts Sunday evening.
- Real-time leaderboard: Participants check their rank 24/7 from any device. No commissioner intervention needed.
- Invite management: Send invite links via text/email. Participants join and pick golfers in 2 minutes.
- Multi-tournament support: Run all four majors with one platform. Returning participants auto-fill from previous tournaments.
Automated pools save 10-15 hours per tournament. You spend 90 seconds setting up the pool, then enjoy the tournament stress-free. No spreadsheets, no Venmo chasing, no manual scoring.

Spreadsheet Template Use Cases
Our free template still works great for certain situations:
Small Friend Groups (4-10 People)
For casual pools with close friends, a spreadsheet is perfectly fine. Payment collection is easy (everyone Venmos you before Round 1), and manual scoring takes only 30 minutes.
One-Time Tournaments
If you're only running a pool for one major (e.g., just the Masters), a spreadsheet avoids subscription costs. Download our template, use it once, done.
Cash-Only Pools
For golf outings where everyone pays cash in person, automated payment processing isn't necessary. A spreadsheet tracks who paid manually.
Custom Scoring Formats
If your pool uses unusual rules (e.g., double points for eagles, bonus for lowest single round), a spreadsheet offers unlimited customization. Automated platforms may not support niche formats.
