How to Use These Masters Pool Tiers

Standard Tiered Format Rules

  • Each participant picks one golfer from each tier (6 total picks)
  • Lowest cumulative score after 72 holes wins
  • Missed cuts: Assign penalty score (typically +10 per remaining round)
  • Withdrawals: Same as missed cut penalty
  • Tiebreaker: Lowest Tier 1 golfer score, then Tier 2, etc.

Payout Structure (Standard)

Example: 30 participants × $50 entry = $1,500 pot

  • 1st Place: $1,050 (70%)
  • 2nd Place: $300 (20%)
  • 3rd Place: $150 (10%)

Why These Tiers Are Balanced

Tier 1 has the 15 golfers with the best odds to win (world ranking + Vegas favorites). Tier 2 includes strong contenders who could absolutely win but have slightly longer odds. By Tier 6, you're into longshots and past champions on the backend of their careers.

This structure ensures everyone gets one elite pick (Tier 1) and one moonshot (Tier 6), keeping the competition fair and exciting through Sunday.

Masters Pool Strategy Tips

1. Tier 1: Take the Best Ball-Striker

Augusta National rewards accuracy more than distance. Scheffler and Morikawa have elite iron play. McIlroy has never won the Masters despite being talented—consider fading him if overvalued.

2. Tier 2-3: Target Past Top-10 Finishers

Augusta rewards course knowledge. Jordan Spieth (Tier 2) and Adam Scott (Tier 3) have both won and consistently finish top-20. These picks minimize risk.

3. Tier 4-5: Find the Hot Hand

Check who's playing well in March leading up to the Masters. Whoever wins the Valspar Championship (March 20-23) or finishes top-5 has momentum. Rickie Fowler or Billy Horschel could sneak in.

4. Tier 6: Past Champions or Bombers

Tiger Woods (if healthy), Bubba Watson, and Sergio Garcia all have Masters wins. They know Augusta. Alternatively, pick a long-drive specialist who can attack par-5s.

Common Masters Pool Mistakes

  • Overvaluing Rory McIlroy: He's never won at Augusta. Great golfer, but cursed venue.
  • Ignoring past champions in lower tiers: Zach Johnson (Tier 5) and Danny Willett (Tier 5) have Green Jackets. Course knowledge matters.
  • Picking based on world ranking alone: Some players don't fit Augusta's demands (right-to-left shot shape helps).
  • Forgetting about weather: If it's windy, veteran ball-strikers shine. If calm, bombers attack.

When to Finalize Your Tiers

Recommended: April 7, 2026 (Monday of Masters week)

The final Masters field is confirmed by the Monday before the tournament. Late withdrawals (injury, personal reasons) can shift tiers. Check the official Masters website on April 7 and adjust if needed.

If a Tier 1 golfer withdraws (rare but possible), promote someone from Tier 2 to keep 15 golfers per tier.
